Description
This book examines the country's debts from independence to the present day. The chronicle of the loans gives the impression that the political leadership of the country tended at times to consider loans (and aid) as "regular income" with various justifications. Greece has been unable to service its debts four times. After each bankruptcy, the country was excluded from the markets for a considerable period, which already made it clear that servicing the debts was a prerequisite for granting new loans.
Recurring and protracted negotiations with lenders, international audits, accounting tricks, all kinds of domestic and foreign intermediaries' frauds, criminal prosecutions for mismanagement, etc. are observed. Eventually, a compromise was reached between the Greek governments and the lenders, and the country obtained new loans.
This book is aimed at students, researchers, journalists, politicians, and anyone else interested in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the country's borrowing experience.
