The book describes a method of "therapy" for mentally ill patients that was apparently used for hundreds of years in churches and monasteries, in which the patient was confined in a very small cell chained until the priest decided that they were cured. The author raises the question of whether this "therapy" is actually harsher than psychoanalysis and the violent confrontation with the Unconscious that it entails.
