The book at hand aims to cover a wide range of the laboratory part of the Electric Machines course, through 31 appropriately selected exercises. It deals mainly with topics related to steady-state operation. It is divided into three chapters: direct current machines (motors-generators), transformers (single-phase-three-phase), and alternating current machines (motors-generators). The phenomena addressed in each laboratory exercise are analyzed in detail in the accompanying theoretical part. Specifically:
The first chapter deals with the no-load characteristic, self-excitation, load characteristics of motors and generators of various types of excitation, determination of efficiency and various types of losses (iron, mechanical). It also includes arrangements for electric braking, the Ward-Leonard control arrangement, and the operation of the series S.R. motor in an A.C. network.
The second chapter deals with the determination of the parameters of the equivalent circuit of the transformer, its operation under load, as well as the parallel operation of transformers. It investigates the various possible connections of three-phase transformers and their effect on the phase deviation of voltages between primary and secondary windings. It also examines the various types of losses, at nominal voltage and frequency.
Finally, the exercises in the third chapter include the determination of the parameters of the equivalent circuit of the asynchronous machine and methods of starting and speed control. It investigates the self-excitation of the asynchronous generator, the operational behavior of the asynchronous double-output generator, as well as various modern and classical braking arrangements. Finally, it deals with the study of characteristics related to the operation of the synchronous generator (no-load, short-circuit, charging) and the parallel operation of synchronous generators. It also includes an exercise on the characteristics of the synchronous motor. [...]
