Description

Over thirty years have passed since democracy was restored in Greece, and during this period the country has experienced significant changes. The pressures exerted by the process of "Europeanization", a natural consequence of joining the European Union, intensified political confrontations and shaped a "modernizing" program, largely identified with Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, which clashed with traditional practices and methods. In addition, new challenges emerged for Greek society, such as the formation of a multicultural society, the lack of faith in old ideologies, and the blurring of old political divisions and rifts. These challenges shaped a new political dynamic for the country. Greece faces pressures to adapt to the new European environment, while specific interests and groups oppose reforms, limiting the political will and the country's ability to respond to challenges.

The present volume, a rare and highly interesting collective work on politics and decision-making processes in modern Greece, gathers studies that analyze in detail controversial issues, such as the degree of penetration of the "modernization" policy in Greek society, changes in the political and party system, foreign policy and Greece's relations with the European Union, reforms in state and economy relations, the insurance system, constitutional rights, and the healthcare system. So, what has changed in Greece in the last thirty years? What could not be implemented and why? What were the political difficulties and who hindered the reforms? What does the future hold for us?
