Description

Piracy in the ancient Greek world is not lacking in anything (organization, tactics, etc.) from this modern phenomenon. Piracy is still practiced today, with pirates still operating in many areas of the world, such as the Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Guinea, Indonesian Straits, etc. The pirates in these areas are well organized, with hierarchical levels, and they do not only settle for opportunistic seizure of goods but also proceed to hijack the vessel and then demand ransom for the release of the crew. Especially in the region of Somalia (Gulf of Aden), the pirates justify their actions by claiming illegal fishing of foreign fishing vessels (which is true) within their waters, but also for other reasons. However, their actions remain illegal, violent, and cause concern and fear among the crews of the ships passing through these areas.

Christy E. Ioannidou's book is a pleasant writing surprise, as it is full of many and varied examples of piracy, which have been selected and excerpted from the study of ancient texts, while at the same time it offers a rich and detailed analysis of this timeless phenomenon. The abundance of references to ancient and contemporary studies facilitates further research for anyone interested. The research conducted by the author regarding the little-known issue of piracy in ancient Greece (it is worth noting that piracy is a form of maritime deception) is equally impressive and interesting and constitutes a globally unique study of this phenomenon within the examined historical period. Finally, the brief but indicative examples of men who engaged in piracy, as well as the references to their famous victims, enhance the book's thematic content, providing a pleasant surprise to the reader.
