The Pre Box S2 Digital marks a new era for the S2 series products. For the first time, it uses dual mono configuration with ESS Sabre D/A converters. Their top brand DAC ensures the highest sound quality in a small and affordable package.
This DAC is capable of high-resolution audio up to 32bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512! The Pre Box S2 Digital is also the first of project audio devices to support MQA hardware decoding. Digital audio is the art of time, and with the new clock design, we have managed to adjust the jitter to an unprecedented 100 Femtoseconds, easily surpassing many well-known and respected clock generators!
With organic polymer capacitors and miniMELF resistors with thin film, we were able to create a compact device. With a set of seven digital filters, the sound can be precisely shaped to the preferences of the listeners. The Pre Box S2 Digital is fully remote-controlled and can also control the playback software of a computer. You can use Play, Pause, Forward, and Rewind directly with the Pre Box S2 Digital!
My review concerns usage in HiFi with a coax cable. It has impressively clear sound, not tiring at all in the highs. With the cheap power supply that comes with it, it has mediocre performance and produces a dull sound. The bass doesn't reach low enough, and the soundstage is limited. When connected with a linear power supply, the bass becomes deeper, the high frequencies are further clarified, and the soundstage opens up impressively. I have connected it with the Linear power supply from Audiophonics, and in combination with a good coaxial digital cable, it rivals a 1000 euro DAC, leaving behind all the cheap Chinese DACs. At the same time, this way, the issue of the lack of an on/off button is resolved since it has the external power supply. It is also worth mentioning that it has a dual mono design, which offers excellent channel separation and stereo imaging. Along with the purchase, you should keep in mind the extra cost of a linear power supply and quality cables. Wireworld, QED, and Chord are excellent choices for their price. Together with the DACMagic 200M, they are the best options in this price range. I have only tested the headphone amplifier with the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0, and it works flawlessly; I have no complaints. I liked it so much that I bought a second one from eBay for the PC. Overall, I believe that if the product were designed with a better case, with an on/off button, linear power, and more convenient buttons, it would be a more complete product, but it would probably cost twice as much. I recommend it 100%. Due to its neutral and clear sound, it fits into almost all systems.
Very clean and very musical. Connected to a PC via USB cable for playback through audirvana. The USB cable is not included in the package. Therefore, for use with a PC, you will have to consider the cost of the cable that you will have to purchase on your own! Overall, it seems to have very good construction and appears to be durable... The headphone amplifier it has is a joke.... It's worth buying it to use as a DAC. If you have headphones with high impedance, it will disappoint you.... Personally, I tried it with the Sennheiser HD 580 that I use, which have 300 ohms, and it was like my phone was driving them... Nevertheless, I will give it 5 stars because I bought it for the DAC and as a DAC, it exceeded my expectations for the money.
