Zone 1

This is the zone between the 12 and 5 positions on the clock. Ideally, point your ankle 20 degrees downward in this zone.

Zone 2

This is the transition zone. Tighten your calf to point your toes 20 degrees upward (as if wiping dirt off your heel) but keep your foot steady on the pedal.

Zone 3

The foot is lifted by the momentum of the pedal and without much weight on the muscles, so you don't lose power.

Zone 4

Return to the downward motion of Zone 1 at the 12 o'clock position. Do not wait for the 3 o'clock position, as you will lose momentum and power.
