Description

Stavros Tsakyrakis, Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Athens, invited by the Greek community of the University of Oxford, discusses with author Apostolos Doxiadis about Democracy in the Post-Dictatorship era. Some of the topics that concern them:
- Is resistance to dictatorship mythologized?
- How were we shaped by the first post-dictatorship years?
- To what extent are all struggles just? The role of trade unions in Greek society.
- What is the state? Are we all part of it?
- The functioning of Greek universities, student unions, and the establishment of non-state universities.
- Does the principle of equality conflict with freedom?
- Is there a freedom of speech problem in Greece?
- What is the role of justice in modern democracy?

The intoxicating atmosphere of meaning that resistance gave to those who acted against the dictatorship during those years cannot be transmitted if you haven't felt it yourself. This deep sense of meaning cannot be easily abandoned. Its loss, in the post-dictatorship era, I can describe more sensitively as the loss of a loved one or, more harshly, as the loss that a drug addict feels when their drugs are taken away. Many of those who lived in this atmosphere did not handle the loss well, meaning they did not mourn it.
Apostolos Doxiadis

Have you heard of any struggles in our days that are considered unjust? Let's say farmers went out and blocked the roads. What do they want? Money. From whom do they want the money? From me. "The struggle is just!" Why? If they want it, they have to convince me, not by force. Isn't that right? Have you heard anyone saying that a certain mobilization is unjust? That they don't agree with it? I don't know, I don't have any in mind. Everyone is fighting. What are they fighting for? To get more money. Seriously? Are these the struggles they are supposed to be doing? And whoever fights is good, even if they harm people? But I want to ask: To what extent are all struggles just? The belief that they are just is a child of dictatorship.

Socratic, dialogical method, the book is written. If someone has been invited to the "decisions of the fifteen-member" and wants to see a more comprehensive and fresh look at modern Greek reality, they will understand many things about the times that have shaped us in recent years. Although it does not provide direct and clear instructions for solving the modern problems faced by those who think, it gives you the tools to think for yourself. It is easy to read, substantial, and with enough depth book. It is worth it.
