Description

Look, I made this wonderful painting. What cool and fragrant flowers! However, I will not allow any doctor to interfere with my daughter's eye. It is my property, my church, my sanctuary.

Ariadne Hope, a Greek-German student, is studying Art History at the Polytechnic University of Dresden. The subject of her thesis is the relationship between Art and the expressive abilities of mentally disturbed individuals, chronically institutionalized, who were killed by the Nazis, with the rationale of "legally exterminating useless animals."

One of the many and varied questions that concern the student is the following: what was the disturbed mentally Berta Gertrud Fleck (1870-1940) trying to say, in symbolic language, to the viewers of her paintings, while she was confined in psychiatric asylums for most of her life and a victim of eugenics? At the same time, the secrets that may be hidden in these few paintings become the subject of careful detection and study.

"The Red Cross" is a novel based on real and fictional characters, real and imaginary events, with dramatic interventions, so that the historical element is intertwined with the fictional, just as the present encounters the past and sometimes travels with it. An inseparable whole, a polyptych, with great importance given to the physiognomy of distinct periods of time. The two eras, the historical (World War I, Weimar, Nazi Germany) and the contemporary coexist, sometimes as theatrical events and sometimes as cinematic works of persecution. The confessions of the characters are the myth that leads them towards self-awareness, the alleviation of the burden of guilt, and possibly towards discharge and relief.
