""The Possessed" is one of the four or five works that I place above all others. For many reasons, I can say that I was nurtured by them and shaped by them. For about twenty years now, however, I have been seeing these faces on stage. They not only have the stature of dramatic characters, but also their behavior, explosions, and their fast and unexpected style. Dostoevsky, after all, has a theatrical technique in his novels: he rolls with dialogues, using certain indications of places and movements. The theater person, whether an actor, director, or playwright, always has all the information he needs at his disposal.

Today, here are "The Possessed" on stage. It took many years of work and observation to bring them up. And yet, I know, I calculate everything that separates the play from this amazing novel! I simply tried to follow the deep mechanism of the book and to progress, like it, from satirical comedy to drama, and then to tragedy."
