Description

The movement of April 21, 1967 was the catalyst for my interest in the relationship between the military and politics in Greece. During my research, I discovered that the phenomenon of military interventions in politics is recent in modern Greek history. Coups d'état became alarmingly frequent after the end of the liberation wars (between 1922 and 1936) and coincided with the weakening of parliamentarism throughout Europe. However, the supremacy of politicians was not challenged before 1967, and the coups, which aimed at political influence, simply sought to replace one political faction with another rather than permanently hand over the government to the military. In this sense, interventions before 1967 were limited to the pattern of a regulator. This also characterizes the dictatorship of Metaxas from 1936-41, which enjoyed the acceptance of a disciplined army, was blessed by the King, and implemented by politicians. The same regime, with its emphasis on nationalism and anti-communism, social discipline and the synthesis of elements from antiquity and Christianity, and its aversion to parliamentary and democratic processes, introduced ideological elements that would later be appropriated by the colonels in 1967, many of whom entered the Evelpidon Military Academy when Ioannis Metaxas had already taken power.
