Most people who can see images in their minds are transformed by mescaline into visionaries. Some of them (...) do not need any change, they were and are visionaries. Blake belonged to a spiritual type that is quite widespread even in the urban-industrial societies of our time. The uniqueness of the poet-artist does not lie in the fact that (to use his own words from the "Descriptive Catalogue") he truly saw "those original creatures that in the Holy Scriptures are called Cherubim" (...) It lies only in his ability to convey with words, or (somewhat less successfully) with lines and colors, some indication, at least, of a not too extraordinarily unusual experience.
