Description

"I don't like working with people in love. Maybe because I envy them - I myself long to be enchanted. Or maybe because love and psychotherapy are incompatible. A good therapist fights the darkness and seeks the light, while love is sustained by mystery and collapses as soon as you start examining it meticulously. And I hate becoming the executioner of love."
Ten true psychotherapy stories from Irvin Yalom's clinical experience. Ten human relationships - ten therapeutic adventures. In this rare depiction of a dedicated therapist at work, a master of psychiatry openly confronts not only his own feelings and mistakes but also the uncertainty that lies at the heart of the therapeutic relationship. Here, Yalom turns the spotlight on both the patients and himself. He describes and examines the process of exploration, the process of participation within psychotherapy for both parties. He shares with us his joys and successes, but also - even more fascinating - his anxieties, limitations, and failures in his joint journey towards the search for truth and healing with each of the ten protagonists of his stories. These captivating stories go beyond psychotherapy and speak of the human fate with all its heartbreaking paradoxes. And in these, Irvin Yalom achieves a passion and humor worthy of Chekhov himself.
"The executioner of love," the therapist himself, is the eleventh patient in these ten psychotherapy stories.
"The executioner of love" was first published in 1990 and is Irvin Yalom's first book where the famous psychotherapist, after his globally renowned scientific books, attempts to narrate psychotherapy stories in a literary manner. It remains to this day a reference point in his literary work.

It's hard to be objective with such a good author-scientist. Excellent description, some stories are indeed shocking while he does not tend to sugarcoat the already problematic cases he narrates.

  • I often refer to his pages. Yalom, through his stories, makes you reevaluate yourself.

Reading Yalom's books is like going through a cycle of psychotherapy sessions combined with lessons in stoic coping with difficult thoughts and situations that arise throughout our lives. Having said that, I believe that many of the patterns and principles proposed by the author-psychotherapist-philosopher-psychiatrist Yalom are repeated in his books (especially in books that recount cases he has taken on, like this one). Essentially, having read one is like having read them all in a way. However, they remain extremely enjoyable and useful readings.

Quite an interesting book that in many points I saw myself facing the same or similar problems that we all encounter daily. It helps you evaluate yourself better and find (more sustainable) solutions.
