In the mobile, detached and memoryless individual, a multitude of communities trapped in their roots are opposed. As if a patchy suit is enough to hide the growing global uniformity. Globalization up high, ethnonationalism down low: caught in the jaws of the megacorp, the democratic state, a historical creation of the nation-state, is in danger of being limited to a minimalist democracy, a simple ceremonial process within the framework of the triumphant "democratic" worship that chants the hymn of abstract human rights.
