Reviews

  • For pure Castlevania lovers, a good blend of the old good traditional 2D, for those who don't know it, it's worth it, for those who were waiting for it, nostalgia but also a little sadness personally because I expected it to be bigger. (Maybe I'm greedy)
Quite good and cleverly set up with small riddles and a worthy continuation of the series finally in 2D

    Nothing...
    A black mess.
I haven't seen it on other consoles, but on the switch it's terrible.
Bad graphics, low fps, and the gameplay is nothing special.
There are much better metroidvania style games out there.

As fans of Castlevania, it is a perfect game that should have been made by Konami years ago. It is worth every € for fans of 2D!

    Verified purchase

I had not played Castlevania before, but since I bought the switch, I started playing games of this kind because they are enjoyable with the controllers, the graphics are good even when playing portable, and they dedicate several hours of gameplay, justifying their price.

I will mention some positive and negative aspects by comparing the game with its computer version and another similar game that I recently finished, Hollow Knight.

    Positives:

It has a nice system with equipment, items, crafting, buy-sell, and level up. All of these make the game require time because you need to become stronger in order to fight stronger opponents as you progress deeper into the map. Obviously, those who play better will not need to dedicate the same amount of time as those who are not familiar with this process.

It gives you small missions, some insignificant and some important, offering more than one occupation.

It has special moves that you learn by reading them from scattered books in the map, or you can accidentally perform them by pressing buttons, and the game will inform you that there is a new move in the archive/move list.

    Huge map to explore.

You can slightly change the appearance of your character, mainly hair color, clothing color, change hairstyle, and some accessories like cat ears, masks, etc. These are unlocked as you progress in the game, but some items can also be obtained by defeating enemies.

Each type of weapon has its positives and negatives, with distinct moves and possibly spells, allowing you to easily change them during battles. Overall, all of this helps enrich the combat style and how you fight different opponents according to your needs.

Boss fights have their own difficulty depending on how prepared you are, such as your level, weapon, healing potions, etc. In short, no matter what happens, even if you are the worst player, you can continue the game as long as you have patience. Usually, each boss fight rewards you with something good, giving you a sense of accomplishment.

You have different spells that you acquire from the monsters you kill, called "shards." Each shard has its own subcategory, such as throwing fire, moving objects, or summoning an ally to help you. Each "shard" category is assigned to a separate button on the controller, allowing you to perform multiple actions simultaneously if needed, without having to change them every time by opening the menu. This also allows you to have your own set up.

In general, the shards are all very distinct, and some are very impressive in terms of what they do. What I liked the most was a spell that turns the room upside down, which in many cases helps you reach areas that you couldn't before or avoid enemy movements.

    Negatives:

The graphics, especially when playing portable, are not that good. It claims to have a 720p resolution, but I don't believe it. Maybe it's because it lacks good anti-aliasing, but the image is not clear, and due to the game's lighting not being the same as on PC/PS4/Xbox, all the colors appear darker, which in some cases causes objects or enemies to blend with the background, resulting in confusion. In the 24-inch computer screen that I played in docked mode, it is by far better, but still cannot be compared to the other consoles.

Sometimes the songs that are playing randomly stop for a while.

The loading time is longer and in some cases annoying when changing rooms, but not something serious enough to ruin the experience.

I feel like the buttons/movements don't respond as quickly as I would like in some cases, and sometimes it won't make the move you want when you start falling from a corner/platform. From what I read earlier, there was an issue that they fixed in a patch update.

After saving, when you get up from the chair, you may freeze for a while, but the game has never crashed on me, you just wait for a few seconds.

During dialogues, the background may lag a bit.

It plays at 30 fps and rarely has small stutters.

    Conclusion:

Apart from the small issues I mentioned, the game is fine. The problems won't change the gaming experience, if you don't plan on playing it portably and have a computer, I recommend getting it for the computer or any other console you have for the best experience, especially in terms of graphics.

The game will keep you occupied for many hours and allows you to replay it from the beginning with a new character, Zangetsu, who has a different playstyle than Miriam.

Also, if you get it on an SD card/cartridge instead of the Nintendo shop, you definitely need to do the update from the software menu, otherwise, you will have issues.

I gave it 4 stars mainly because of the graphics during portable use, but.

Update: After finishing it, I can say that if you want to achieve 100% map completion with the quests in one save file with Miriam (the first character you play as), it will take at least 50 hours (without watching guides on YouTube).

Furthermore, I read that the game will have additional updates.

The game has significant fps drop/lag in three points on the map (Twin dragon towers/last boss fight/twin dragon boss fight), but in the other areas, it remains stable at 30 fps even in Dock mode.

If you like this game, I recommend buying Hollow Knight, which I consider better than Bloodstained.

Update: I have now finished it with three characters (Miriam/Zangetsu/Bloodless), and I have to say that especially with Bloodless, the game offers a quite different experience, especially in terms of exploring the map. Additionally, there have been other updates with a new game mode for fans of the old Castlevania games, and many bug fixes and significantly more stable fps, even in the challenging areas. With 65 hours of gameplay, the game is an amazing purchase for Metroidvania fans, and personally, it is among the top 3 for me. It is definitely a worthwhile purchase, especially when it's on sale.

The game is excellent in all aspects. If you are a fan of the Castlevania series, specifically Symphony of the Night, then this game is for you. Stop reading anything below and get it with your eyes closed.

The review I am giving is about the Nintendo Switch, in no way does it concern a powerful computer with 4K resolution, a comparable PlayStation 4 Pro (which obviously has higher resolution and looks even more beautiful in the game). But in the above cases, portability is sacrificed.

I got the game on its release day and did not encounter any serious issues with the graphics. The controls, sound, and gameplay of the game were equally good. In no way did I feel like I was playing a different game than the one released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or PC.

It is a commendable title at a fairly affordable price.

It is an amazing game with a very mediocre to poor transfer to the switch. It is really much superior on other consoles. They have promised fixes for the switch, but until then, it is better to buy it on other consoles. As a game, it is a typical Castlevania style game, similar to Symphony of the Night and the DS Castlevania games. However, on the switch, it is blurry, with many bugs and input lag that greatly affects the gameplay.
