Description

"Price and Money" is a work about the role of money in love and family relationships in Greece in the early 20th century. The young heroine Rini falls in love with a young man from a higher social class. However, her mother refuses to give the dowry that the prospective groom wants, even when he kidnaps her daughter. Through a simple and concise story, the author manages to vividly depict and critically examine a timeless and crucial social issue, with a highly advanced treatment of the women's issue for the Greek reality of the time.

Eri Stavropoulou's study, based on Theotokis' work, attempts to shed light on the theme of the lovestruck woman in Greek and European literature, from the mid-19th century to World War I. Examples from works by Kostis Palamas, Kallirroi Parren, Gregory Xenopoulos, Kostas Hatzopoulos, Nikos Kazantzakis, Balzac, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Ibsen, Hardy, Strindberg, Chekhov, and others show that, in a period of struggles for education, equality, and the substantive liberation of women, literature presents tragic love stories that clash with economic interests or are violently interrupted when social morality does not allow the fulfillment of romantic feelings. Among the heroines of these stories, Rini stands out for her courageous stance and defense of her right to life.
