Description

This monograph, written in collaboration by two Greek Byzantinists, a historian and a numismatist who was responsible for the overall illustrative editing of the work, represents the first comprehensive attempt to publish a general handbook in Greece on Byzantine numismatics and its basic characteristics. The book is based on extensive numismatic literature and records the views of leading numismatists from the second half of the 19th century onwards. A special appendix-essay provides extensive Byzantine numismatic bibliography, updated to the present day, while three additional appendices record and codify the corresponding bibliographic progress in other medieval states (particularly those neighboring Byzantium), in Western Europe, the Balkans, and the northeastern European frontier, in the pre-Islamic and Islamic Near East, in the Crusader states, as well as during periods of foreign dominations in the territories of the Byzantine Empire, such as the era of Muslim rule (Arab rule) in Crete (c. 824-960/961 AD) and the Latin dominations in Cyprus and the mainland and island Greek territories (from 1191/92 and 1204 AD respectively). The book, with rich unpublished illustrations until now, is addressed to the specialist researcher, the collector, but also to the history enthusiast reader of Byzantine topics, its history, culture, and art, as these are projected by Byzantine coins, "those truthful witnesses," as the late professor of the University of Peloponnese Vasso Penna used to refer to them.
