Description

How did an advertiser manage to make brushing teeth a daily habit worldwide?

How did a general manage to calm wild crowds with the help of fast food?

How did swimmer Michael Phelps achieve a world record with his goggles filled with water?

How can advertisers identify pregnant women before they even inform their families about the happy event?

The answer is one: HABIT. Most of the choices we make every day may seem like products of a reasoning process, but in reality, they are not. They are habits. And these habits significantly affect our health, productivity, financial security, and happiness.

The topic of habit has concerned humans for centuries, but only in the last twenty years have neurologists, psychologists, and sociologists begun to realize how habits affect our lives - and, most importantly, how they change. In "The Power of Habit," award-winning "New York Times" journalist Charles Duhigg compellingly analyzes the scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed to improve our lives.

I bought the English version of this book ("The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business") a few years ago, but I had forgotten about it on the shelf until recently. Eventually, it turned out to be such a good book that I ended up buying several copies of the Greek edition to give as gifts.

The book consists of self-contained stories (not fiction) from the fields of research, science, and marketing/sales. These stories are "digestible," meaning they are easy to read and the writing style maintains the reader's interest. Personally, I would read one story each day so that I could process what I discovered, and the next day I always had the curiosity to move on to the next one. It differs quite a bit from other "self-improvement" books, as it does not simply present the scientific data supporting certain positions, nor does it present opinions/proposals that the reader should adopt.

Another advantage of the book is that it is not aimed at a specific professional, age, or other group - even if someone does not intend to make changes in their life based on the insights they will gain, the stories it contains are a pleasant way to spend one's time and learn some interesting historical events - for example, the story about targeted advertisements to supermarket customers based on their specific characteristics was one of the most interesting for me.

Finally, I would like to point out that the Greek edition with the white cover is the third reprint (March 2020), while the one with the yellow cover is an older edition, similar to the English one. I have already recommended it to acquaintances, and it has been quite successful.
