Description

The book includes almost four hundred puzzles. The first nine chapters cover the entire field of "naked-eye" physics - those phenomena that can be observed without special scientific equipment.

In these, the questions refer to squeaking snow, hot ice, disappearing elephants, basic colors of light, "Cartesian divers", immovable arrangements, dynamic lift, smoke rings, fog sirens, virtual tonal height of choral music, singing wine glasses, magnet armatures, levitating mice, hourglasses, tightrope walkers, anti-gravity, strange pendulums, structures of generalized tension, bicycles and cars - to name a few of the many topics of the book. Three additional chapters deal with the physics of sports, geophysics and astronomy. They include questions related to high jump performances, baseball curveballs, golf ball dimples, shore waves, negative charge of the Earth, river meanders, encounters of planetary orbits, the Moon's orbit around the Sun, and the exploration of planets - again, by way of example.

The difficulty of the puzzles ranges from simple questions (for example, "Why can you warm your hands by blowing on them gently, while you can cool them by blowing on them forcefully?") to more complex problems that require extensive analysis ("Some bricks are stacked in such a way that each one protrudes from the brick below it without falling. Is it possible to create a stack of bricks in which the protrusion of the brick at the top is beyond the brick at the base?"). The answers to these problems and relevant bibliographic references follow, and in extent, they make up about half of the book.
