Description

This book covers a large and important period of Greek history, which begins in 1453 and ends in 1832 with the creation of the independent Greek state. The approximately 380 years of historical narration are divided into three sections: a) aspects of the new Hellenism; b) the Greek revolution (1821-1828); c) the Kapodistrian and post-Kapodistrian period (1828-1832). The first section describes the basic institutions, social groups, and intellectual movements of Hellenism during the period of Ottoman rule, which had social and economic effects on the Orthodox Christians of the Greek region. The second section presents one of the most important events in modern Greek history: the revolutionary action of the Orthodox in the Danubian principalities and the southern Balkan Peninsula during the period 1821-1828. Additionally, it describes the various phases of the revolution, the reactions it caused in Europe and the Ottoman Empire, the efforts of the Ottomans to suppress the liberation struggle, as well as the attempts of the Great Powers to resolve the Greek issue. The last section deals with the work of Ioannis Kapodistrias as the governor of Greece (1828-1831), the opposition actions taken against him, and his assassination. At the same time, it records the political anarchy that prevailed in the country after the governor's death, which lasted until the election of Otto to the Greek throne.
