This book is addressed to all Greeks around the world who wish to learn details about all the events that marked the history of Cyprus from 1945 to 1974.
In Greece, we believe that we know a lot about Cyprus, but unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of us know little and in fragments. In Cyprus, almost all the older generations have systematically engaged in historical information, having themselves experienced the tragic events. However, there are situations, events, testimonies of politicians, diplomats, military personnel, etc., that are silenced to cover up tragic decisions and outcomes for Cyprus. This silence, however, makes it difficult to understand the events.
With this book, we attempt to approach what happened in the foreground and behind the scenes during the aforementioned critical period, through additional information that has come to light in the last twenty years with the testimonies and interviews of the protagonists, from state archives, research, etc., on both sides of the Atlantic. And all this is presented simply and understandably for all citizens.
In this book, through a dialogical form where various groups, at different times, discuss the events in Cyprus, facts, opinions, and analyses are presented, starting from the 1948 plebiscite and continuing with the 1950 referendum, the discussion at the UN in 1954, EOKA, the Zurich-London agreements, the Turkish Cypriot insurgency (1963-64), the arrival of the Greek division in Cyprus, the events of Agios Ilarion and Tylliria, the Acheson plan, Aspida, the April 21st coup and the meeting in Evros, the Kofinou operation, Panagoulis, the attempt against Makarios in 1970, the assassination of Georgadjis, the National Front, EOKA B', and concluding with the coup and the Turkish invasion. In between, important diplomatic details, conspiratorial moves, paramilitary actions, espionage, intrigues, war conflicts, various circulating scenarios, etc., are mentioned.
Our goal is to present all these events and the hidden, bitter truths that accompany them in one volume, so that every interested party can be informed about the events from multiple perspectives and draw their own conclusions.
