Our story takes us to Trinidad in the Caribbean, specifically to The Hill, a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of the capital, Port of Spain. There, right under the enemy's nose, where "the sun sets in hunger and rises in the potholes of the streets," unfolds the idle everyday life of those who refused "to be ground by the mill of the colonial machine and be dried into sugar, cocoa, and coconut shavings."
With the central character being Alldrick, who falls madly in love with the enchanting Sylvia and becomes politically radicalized, even resorting to armed action, we witness the contradictions and dilemmas of a post-colonial society in transition... living and dreaming to the rhythms of calypso.
