Description

"The Möbius Strip" has given a new perspective to modern mathematics, offered useful applications in industry, sparked the creativity of artists, and inspired producers of science fiction films.

This simple, closed strip that shows how two surfaces can be transformed into one, disrupts our creative thinking and imagination. Its secrets are interpreted by topology: a branch of mathematics that studies which spatial properties of a body remain unchanged, even if we deform its shape, without tearing it, piercing it, breaking it, or sticking something on it.

Pickover offers an enjoyable experience: through simple puzzles and riddles, intelligence exercises and patented inventions, through applications of knot theory, through the Klein bottle, Alexander's horned sphere, the Penrose triangle, colorful fractals, complex loops, and a host of strange topological objects, the reader experiences the transcendental reality of the Möbius strip. Its abstract mathematics become remarkably familiar when we enjoy them through creative games, art, music, architecture, literature, and even through cinema.

A kaleidoscope book, full of enigmatic gems - a challenge to our mental abilities. Diving into Pickover's topographic ocean significantly enhances the power of our minds.

What is this famous "Möbius strip"? Even a child can make a film like the one discovered in 1858 by the German August Ferdinand Möbius, descendant of Luther, student of the eminent mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss. The process is simple: We cut a long strip of paper, turn one end of it upside down (180° rotation), and glue it onto the other end.

Inspired by the topology of the Möbius strip, the renowned Maurits Escher created his wonderful lithographs, proving the fruitful relationship between mathematics and artistic creation.

Today, the abstract mathematics hidden in the Möbius strip are applied, among other things, in industry, nanotechnology, and astronomy (in research on the structure and shape of the Universe).
