On a farm outside Pretoria, the Swart family gathers for the funeral of the family's mother, but beneath the mourning, their differences simmer... From the younger generation, Anton and Amor come to despise what their family represents, such as the broken promise to the black servant, Salome, who has spent her entire life working for them. They promised her at some point that they would give her her house, her land... but the years and decades pass, and the promise is never fulfilled. The narrative flows from one character to another.

And as the country transitions from the dark past of racial discrimination to a supposedly more just present, a much larger promise, to an entire people, seems to be broken...
