After the 685, which will go to the vacation home, I bought the arte model to be my main coffee maker at home. It makes the same good coffee as the 685. The main difference (which personally doesn't concern me much since I don't drink coffee with milk) is the steam wand and also the fact that its double basket holds 16 grams of coffee, compared to the 14 grams that the 685 can hold maximum, so you can make a decent freddo, even with the factory setting. I believe it is worth the extra money to upgrade to the 885.
As you can see in the photos, with this espresso machine you can even make latte art. The quality of the coffee is definitely not that of a professional machine, but with the tips, the bottomless portafilter, and some good adjustments on a decent grinder, you won't miss coffee from outside. With this amount of money, you are buying a coffee machine that gives you a decent coffee. Achieving the result of a coffee made by a machine that costs between 6000 and 10000 is certainly very difficult, even with modifications on home machines. I am satisfied with the money I spent and with how easy it is to use and clean. The fact that its steam wand is like a professional one helps even more for a better quality cappuccino.
Fantastic machine, I was surprised by how quickly it heats up and makes the coffee. Of course, the descaler that is shown in the photos is no longer included but it doesn't matter. Recommended!
Bought it for 299 euros, returned it the same day as the water tank was leaking and water was running like a river underneath, got a replacement after 2 days. The new machine worked great for a while, making amazing coffee, but then it started to not be able to produce coffee, as if there was no pressure. I even tried using half the amount of coffee and not pressing it at all, but it still couldn't produce coffee. Additionally, the steam function was not working either. I returned it on 16/3/24, they have sent it to the service center and I am waiting.
P.S. The previous model is still in use in a workplace and makes over 20 coffees daily for the past 3 years without any issues (same coffee with the same process), that's why I bought it again.
Excellent machine for those who have recently started their journey into the world of coffee. With a few additions, you will be able to make coffee equal to what you drink at a good café. Specifically:
- As soon as you get it, get a bottomless portafilter and a good basket. The one that comes with the machine is pressurized and the coffee it produces is meh. Additionally, the bottomless portafilter will allow you to see the entire coffee extraction process. As you gain experience and explore, you will see how you can draw conclusions about the coffee before even tasting it, just by observing how the coffee flows.
- Get a scale to weigh the amount of coffee.
- Optionally, get a WDT tool to distribute the coffee properly in the portafilter.
- Get a dosing ring to avoid spilling coffee.
After you have the above, comes the fun part, experimentation. There are many factors that affect the coffee produced by the machine, so trial and error will be necessary. Initially, before you invest in your own grinder, go to a coffee shop and find the beans you like and ask them to grind 50g for you to try the resulting coffee. For this specific machine, I grind them at 1.4 and it turns out great. If the coffee struggles to come out and only a small amount is produced, it means that either the grind is too fine or you tamped the coffee too hard. If the coffee flows too quickly and is watery without crema, then the grind is too coarse.
WARNING! When you get the bottomless portafilter, don't even try to use supermarket coffee because it is ground too coarse and the coffee will come out watery. I could write many more things, but I will conclude by saying that for a first machine, it is honest and I highly recommend it.
MAJOR UPDATE: For those who decide to get a grinder (the truth is, it's a one-way street) and don't have an unlimited budget, do not get a cheap electric grinder (especially if it's a blade grinder), but rather a manual burr grinder. I got one from a well-known Taiwanese company and it radically changes the experience.
Really excellent! Sturdy construction made of stainless steel, a nozzle that the more expensive professional espresso machines have and that makes frothed milk as it should be if someone knows how to handle it correctly. No comparison to automatic machines that cost even 600€-700€. With a manual machine, specifically this EC885, if you learn how to operate it, you can make espresso that is 90% as good as what you would drink from a professional machine with a skilled barista, because the truth is that most people don't know. You will not be disappointed with the purchase. Buy it without hesitation unless you want a machine that does everything itself, but you definitely won't be drinking the same coffee.
Excellent the best purchase I have made. For coffee, I recommend the Hausbrandt Blue. If it is freshly ground, perfect.... Even if it had ten stars, I would give them.

It doesn't produce water, it only does preinfusion. It may be defective. I will update when I am informed by the store.
Update: The first one was indeed defective. The store replaced it for me immediately.
