Considered a sin and a criminal offense for centuries, male homosexuality was pathologized in the 19th century and became the subject of a new medical specialty emerging in northern and central Europe: sexology. This study presents the central questions, explanatory frameworks, and therapeutic proposals developed within the European sexological traditions, as well as the connection between representatives of sexology and the movement for the rights of homosexuals.
During the same period in Greece, despite its adherence to the European medical model, there is no development of sexology. There is a lack of specialized studies on homosexuality in Greek-language literature, while brief references in forensic and psychiatric manuals and articles present both human reproductive life as inseparably linked to reproduction and same-sex sexual relationships exclusively as a disease. Furthermore, there is no Greek movement for the rights of homosexuals in the social field.
