Ancient Nafpaktos, one of the most important cities and ports of western Locris and southern Aetolia, is not widely known, despite its historical role in antiquity, even though it has been continuously excavated since the 1960s, revealing significant findings.
The book is a long journey through a period of approximately 3,000 years, during which the gradual development of the settlement and the territory of the city is traced throughout the centuries, highlighting its unique geographical and cultural position in the heart of the continental Greek area. Many unpublished archaeological elements about the ancient city are systematically presented for the first time, within the historical and geographical context. Nafpaktos is revealed as a primarily maritime and continuously active settlement that was never abandoned, not even during the Roman era, unlike most cities in northern Greece, but instead played a key role in specific historical periods.
Fotini S. Saranti was born and lives in Patras. She graduated from the Department of Archaeology and History of Art at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens and completed her doctoral thesis on Nafpaktos at the Department of History and Archaeology at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina. She works as an archaeologist at the Ministry of Culture and Sports, in the Ephorate of Antiquities of Aetolia-Acarnania and Lefkada, based in Mesolongi. She has conducted numerous excavations and has published a large number of scientific studies and articles in Greek and foreign journals.
