Paul is in the second grade of elementary school. When he hears about the painting competition in his art class, he panics. He doesn't like any of his paintings. He thinks about asking his mom, who is a famous painter, for a painting. His mom shows him the paintings she made at his age to show him that nobody starts out perfect, and that progress and hard work are very important.
A book overflowing with empathy and tenderness. The author is a psychologist. Children can identify with Paul because most of them have similar anxieties and thoughts. It is written in such a way as to help children feel that it is perfectly normal to feel anxious, it is perfectly normal to feel like they don't do everything perfectly, but it is also perfectly normal to not do everything perfectly. Something that, for me, is very important. To be able to have children who are not guilty and who love themselves just as they are is a big challenge. I like it because it helps the parent to put themselves in the child's shoes and understand how they feel.
The finding with the mother revealing her "masterpieces" (her first works) is particularly imaginative. It is well written, and can be easily read by an elementary school child reading on their own.

Did you find this review helpful? My son really liked it. It is important to write books that do not present the parent as a perfect role model but that we also struggled at some point and with effort we succeeded. The page in sepia with mom at a young age is our favorite

Did you find this review helpful? It is a book full of tenderness and understanding towards children's weaknesses. A little boy (reminded me a lot of my son!) tells his mother to do the painting for school because he doesn't believe in himself. The mom opens her box of memories and now the child understands that she has also been in the same position, that no one is born perfect and the important thing is effort and perseverance! Very nice messages delivered very naturally.
