Description

Folklore has integrated, from its beginnings, the child and childhood into its interests and has dealt on the one hand with the elements of popular culture that focus on the child (biological and social birth, rituals of successive incorporations, forms of education, narratives, etc.) and on the other hand with the culture that children themselves create and experience (games, communication, language, non-verbal popular culture, etc.).

This collection and study specifically emphasized the parameters of creating and transforming a culture by and for children. It is based on the testimonies of 45 residents of Velvento, following a systematic field research, in a space where the collected folklore material (folktales, songs, and games) is still a living tradition. This tradition is approached not as a product of static or indefinite imagination, but, on the contrary, in relation to the familiar way of life of its carriers and the social conditions of its dissemination.

Specifically for the folktale, the typology of Velvento variations (theme, dissemination, motifs, interweaving, local elements) is examined, while their classification according to the system of the international catalog Arne - Thompson - Uther enriches the body of Greek folklore and allows comparisons with a global narrative tradition.

The Velvento Cultural Association and the Kozanites (Kaplanoglou Study Center), who morally and materially encouraged and supported this publication, share, in addition to their interest in Velvento and its culture, a not unfounded opinion: that this culture also has a particular dynamic in the educational community, as it directs it towards society and the recognition of the value of everyday, non-commercialized cultural expressions. In the context of teaching that seeks the creative response of students, this approach acquires special significance.
