Memories, images, and readings of the black and white city (from 1912 to 1974) provoke stimuli and associations for individuals and places that have shaped its historical profile. Giorgos Anastasiadis, drawing material and ideas from historical and literary books, experiences, and old and contemporary newspapers, traces, preserves, and presents aspects of the multifaceted historical, intellectual, and cultural background of his birth city.



The volume contains seven essays of historiography: The first one traces the "brief" 20th century of the city and proposes a guide to the study of the points from which our knowledge of the historical identity of modern Thessaloniki derives.



In the other essays, Giorgos Anastasiadis approaches:


- The press of Thessaloniki as an ark of memory

- The International Exhibition as it emerges through the pages of history and literature

- The Thessaloniki of the refugees through the eyes of Giorgos Ioannou

- The iconic teachers of the university and their creative breath

- The liberation of a "difficult" memory, focusing on the survivors of the Thessaloniki Holocaust

- The Thermaic Gulf through a historical and literary perspective.
