An amazing detective novel written in such a everyday and accessible way and with such a structure that captivates you. Stories intertwine over the decades and in the end they come together artistically in a tragic and captivating way. Next-door heroes who seem strange at first glance, but who, in my opinion, are the crucial element that makes this book stand up to great authors of detective novels. One important element that stood out to me is that the author does not try to impress the reader with exaggerated action scenes, nor does she pull the plot out of thin air to make it appear complex. Instead, she successfully portrays the characters and gives them a distinct role in the plot. There were moments when I laughed at some dialogues or scenes, others when I was disturbed and anxious about what would happen on the next page. It was a book that held my interest and I would easily read it again. It was read in one breath and that says it all!
