Description

In a landmark work on American and global literature, Charles Browneell presents the history of all the native tribes of North and South America, from the time of the first colonization of the Western Hemisphere in 1492, until the mid-19th century. Customs and traditions, peaceful encounters and terrible wars with the colonizers, mutual atrocities and massacres, are described by the author with astonishing vividness and impartiality, offering a wealth of information that is presented to the Greek reading audience for the first time.

In the third book, the Six Nations are presented, the great and powerful federation of tribes that inhabited the areas of New York and the Great Lakes, and which proved to be either a terrible enemy or a valuable ally to the colonizers who tried to assimilate them. Also, the warlike tribes of the Otawas, the Delawares, the Shawnees, and the Sac, who, although forgotten by the general public today, were the ones who fought with the greatest passion and bravery against the invasion of the colonizers in their country, often achieving proud victories against powerful regular armies. Browneell narrates with admirable historical accuracy for his time the exploits of war chiefs such as Thayendanegea, Logan, the Cornplanter, Pontiac, Red Jacket, Little Turtle, Tecumseh, and Black Hawk, the leader of the natives in the last war they waged against the colonizers east of the Mississippi River.
