Description

The out-of-print masterpiece by Malvina Karali "Sabbatogenimeni" is being re-released by LIFO Books, fifteen years after its first publication. In addition to the texts from the first edition, it includes an appendix with new, unpublished texts, while the cover features a photograph of her on Evripidou Street by Spyros Staveris.

In the foreword of the new edition, publisher Stathis Tsagkarousianos notably mentions:

Fifteen years have passed since the first edition of this book. Logically, the interest around Malvina should have subsided. She no longer appears on television, tastes have changed, Greece has experienced seismic changes. And yet. All these changes have helped to intensify her myth. The demand for her out-of-print book was increasing in our offices. There was a reason.

The multiple crises of the last decade have depleted Greek media of any diversity or boldness. In the new wreckage, the memory of Malvina seems like science fiction. Was there ever such a case? Such sparkling, swift, idiosyncratic writing! With such a wealth of associations and references! With such boldness against authority!

These are the best texts Malvina ever wrote. By far. They have something robust and sparkling, even though they speak of matters of the heart and death. Time has increased them. It highlighted their metallic style, their dense intelligence. Especially the texts from New York, during the months of illness, have something rare. They are an oblique conversation with death, full of awe, anger, and fatigue. They are brilliant essays on the adventures of love, Greek society with its outrageous characters, the thought of death, and the dilemmas of conscience. At the same time, they are the cryptic diary of a wonderful and dark girl who left too soon.
