Description

There is an ongoing and increasing conflict between modern and postmodern social theory. The latter rejects modern approaches as economic, essentialist, and often leading to authoritarian policies. Modern theory criticizes postmodern approaches for rejecting holistic conceptual frameworks that facilitate the formation of a comprehensive understanding of how social entities (organizations, communities, nation-states, etc.) have been established, reproduced, and transformed. It argues that the rejection of holistic methodologies leads to social myopia - a refusal to critically explore the type of general problems addressed by classical sociology. This book attempts to bridge the gap between these two conflicting perspectives and proposes a new holistic framework that is neither reductionist/economic nor essentialist. "Bridges between modern and postmodern social theory" is aimed at researchers and students of social theory and social sciences in general.
